I’m the type of person who mourns the end of summer like a good relationship that ended abruptly—and not by mutual choice. And yet, once I inhale the crisp air for a few days, I’m able to find love again although the terms of it are redefined. The days are shorter, which is another way of saying that nights are longer and that’s not all bad. There’s the resuming of lectures and events, and reconnecting with people whom I haven’t seen during the summer hiatus. There’s the unwelcome competing for parking spaces and waiting in line at the bakeries now that students are back in town. Fall ushers in the never dull spectacle of foliage turning from green to gold then orange and red, reminding us of the changes that happen to our own bodies with each passing season.
There’s the donning of a sweater, retrieved from the margins of my closet. My appetite migrates as reliably as a flock of waterfowl, away from light salads to more substantial dishes such as this roast chicken with apples recipe that I hunger for only—but always—at this time of year.
More than anywhere else, the signs of a new season are visible at farmers’ markets. Continuing my series of videos devoted to the seasonal cycle of markets, I’m delighted to present the latest installment (video below). Buy these items at their freshest and most flavorful, which is to say NOW. And buy them, whenever you can, directly from those who grew them, which is to say at farmers’ markets.
Alas, I can say and mean it, “Welcome, Fall. I’ve missed you.”
Sending wishes for a bountiful season! ~Marjorie

Enjoyed reading your Fall blog. Not too many changes here in Florida, however it brought back memories of Pennsylvania. 😊
The changing of seasons keeps me with a firm foothold in New England. But Florida certainly has other benefits.
Wonderful photos and a good reminder of fall pleasures.
I enjoyed taking these photos. Thanks for the feedback!
