Rue Mouffetard is one of the most historic and colorful market streets in Paris. It’s also popular among tourists, so if you prefer to travel off-the-beaten path then pick another market street.
Located in the Latin Quarter, rue Mouffetard is an old cobblestone street whose market activity dates back to medieval times. As you wend your way up or down the narrow street, peer at the buildings whose walls sag and brag of history.
The market is liveliest on weekends (as with most markets)–Saturdays and Sunday mornings. You might even have a chance to dance in the streets or join a singalong with cabaret singers and musicians.
The best concentration of market shops is at the bottom of the sloping street in the vicinity of Saint-Médard Square. Excellent cheeses, fresh fruits, breads, rôtisserie chicken, and much more (including some trendy shops) are at the densest here. If you amble in the opposite and upward direction–and after rue Mouffetard turns into rue Descartes–you can visit the Panthéon at the top of the hill.

Although mentioned by several guides that the market is open from Tuesday to Sunday, when we visited the market on Tuesday 06 August at 11:30am, many stalls and shops were closed.
Sorry to hear that. It’s disappointing to arrive at a market with shuttered stalls. Shop & stall hours can be variable. As a general rule, Saturdays and Sundays are the liveliest days. They’re quieter in August because of vacations. Hope you’ll give it another chance next visit.
