Barcelona is a dream come true for anyone who loves markets. The best known and biggest of the markets in Barcelona is La Boqueria, near the Ramblas, but there are 39 others in locations throughout the city. Santa Caterina market, for example, is another that is also central to major sights in Barcelona and worth a visit. It’s in the hip El Born neighborhood and only a short walk from the Picasso Museum. In some respects it’s a better experience than La Boqueria: it has outstanding quality and selection, but without the hordes of tourists. It’s an authentic neighborhood market where locals go to buy provisions from their favorite trusted vendors. And so it depends what you’re seeking. If you’re looking for intense buzz and liveliness, then Boqueria is for you. But if you’re seeking a calmer atmosphere, then check out Santa Caterina or one of the other markets in Barcelona.
Santa Caterina is one of Barcelona’s oldest covered markets. Its name comes from the convent of Santa Caterina which burned in 1835, and it’s on this site that the market now stands. It makes a striking appearance as you approach with its bright wavy roof.
Some say that the colorful mosaic evokes Gaud铆’s architectural style, while others say that it calls to mind the vibrant hues of the fresh fruits and vegetables that are plentiful at the food stalls inside. Decide for yourself, but do go if you possibly can. It’s a chance to experience Barcelona’s thriving market culture in a more intimate setting, with all the splendor of local foods at their best.

Hi Marjorie – Did you try the associated restaurant, Cuines Santa Caterina? We took our tour guests there for dinner once evening, after enjoying several delicious meals there ourselves – very fresh, of course, but also unique takes on traditional items.
Love Barcelona and can’t wait to return!
So enjoy your posts –
I didn’t try it, but now it’s on my list for next time. Thanks for the suggestion! ~Marjorie
